The 'Coronation Street' legend admitted she was so concerned about signing up for the ITV show and hurting herself it put her off accepting a place on the programme, but three years after her initial offer she changed her mind.
She said: "It was just too scary, and I was worried about hurting myself.
"My younger daughter Hattie used to go, and I’d get a coffee and watch her from the side. But I’d never go on the ice.
"I was first asked about 'Dancing on Ice' three years ago, but it’s taken me this long to pluck up the courage to do it."
Sally - who has portrayed Weatherfield icon Sally Metcalfe in the ITV soap since 1986 - admitted the coronavirus pandemic lockdowns ultimately played a big part in her signing up for a place on the ice.
She added to the Daily Mirror newspaper: "The lockdowns were a factor in me deciding to take up the offer. They made me think I should take every opportunity that comes my way, as I don’t know how many more there will be.
"I thought, ‘I’ve got the chance to do this incredible thing, conquer my fears and learn a new skill while really getting out of my comfort zone.’
"I knew if I didn’t take the opportunity now, I never would."
Earlier this year, Sally was announced as the first contestant on next year's 'Dancing on Ice', and the soap star admitted she had decided to take on the challenge before she is too old to slip on some skates.
She said: "This is a massive challenge. It really, really is. I’m not getting any younger, I’ve just got to take every opportunity I get so that when I’m old I can say you know what? I gave it a go.
"I'm 58 now, if I don't do it this year then I'll never do it ... I'm doing this for myself, to give me a bit of confidence.
“Now everyone knows I’m doing it I can’t back out can I?! And I’m so scared!”
