‘Coronation Street’s Sally Ann Matthews says Jenny Connor is “shocked” when Johnny unveils his past.
The 50-year-old actress - who has played the character on the ITV soap since 1986 - spilled details of an upcoming episode which sees her on-screen husband Johnny Connor (Richard Hawley) reveal how he was involved in the Bistro robbery, which leads to Craig Tinker being shot.
Speaking to Digital Spy, she said: “Initially Jenny knows something is not right with Johnny, but she doesn't know what it is. She keeps asking him and he starts to bite her head off a little bit every time she asks.
“As things start to not fit in, Jenny sees that he's lying. She asks him to completely tell her the truth and he tells her a portion of the truth – and she finds out a little bit more.”
Johnny also comes clean about his involvement in a previous robbery with the scheming Scott Emberton.
But it is Scott who fills in the blanks for Jenny when Johnny fails to tell her the whole story, leaving Jenny stunned and unsure about her marriage.
Sally Ann continued: "Jenny is totally shocked when she finds out the truth. She knew Johnny wasn't whiter than white and was a bit of a wide boy, but maybe that he was just selling some dodgy tape recorders, something low level!
“Jenny does what she has always done and completely protects herself – she completely ignores what she has been presented with. She just ostriches it, head in the sand!”
However, things are set to escalate this week when Scott holds Jenny at gunpoint in The Rovers to stop Johnny from going to the police.
Sally Ann revealed: "Jenny is terrified. She might live on Coronation Street and her dad might have tried to kill Rita, but in reality if someone pulls a gun on you, you'd be cacking yourself – and she is!”
