Averaging 6.5 million viewers and a 24% share of the audience, the first series achieved 7.3 million viewers and 27% in its most-watched episode, winning its scheduling slot for each of the four episodes broadcast.

A new four-part story involving the married couple Robert and Katy, played by Christopher Eccleston and Marsha Thomason respectively, has been created - a duo that own a guest house in a remote location providing cover for a police safe house. What the local community don't know is that the pair offer the home to those in need of protection, whose lives are at risk.

Steve November, ITV's Director of Drama said: "We had a tremendous reaction from the audience to Safe House. From the gripping story and compelling performances, we were delighted with every aspect of the production. With Ed Whitmore and Tracey Malone writing the scripts and Jill and Paula producing we know the new series will be in safe hands."

Eleventh Hour Films Head of Development Paula Cuddy who will executive produce adds: "From the outset the ambition was for Safe House to become a returnable series. The characters of Robert and Katy, maintaining their cover and providing a place of safety for those in need of protection is a compelling idea. We're thrilled to be returning to tell another complex and engaging story."

Safe House series 2 will begin filming in the Lake District in February 2016, and will be broadcast on ITV later that year.
