The CW series and UK Netflix exclusive Riverdale – based on the long-running Archie comics – has become quite the hit through the first half of its debut season this year. With showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa working on the show alongside Greg Berlanti and other big names in the world of entertainment, the series has had every opportunity to succeed, and looks to be on the up.
Now, in a brand new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Aguirre-Sacasa has spoken a little about what it took to bring the series to the small screen, and an upcoming twist to the ‘murder mystery’ genre that’s running through the first season.
He commented: “Obviously I can’t confirm or deny anything, but I will tell you that Afterlife (one of the comic book series which took a horror turn, with the town’s teens facing a zombie apocalypse) or not, there definitely will be a big genre element to season 2. It won’t suddenly just be a coming-of-age drama. There will definitely be a very strong, bold genre statement. If season 1 is a murder mystery, it won’t necessarily be another murder mystery.
“We’re telling, for us, kind of the best version of a murder mystery: Who killed Jason Blossom? So whatever twist in genre element that we add in season 2, it’s going to be different from that and probably, I think, it’s going to make people go, ‘They’re not really doing that, are they?’”
One of the most rumoured theories is that Sabrina the Teenage Witch will be making her way from the Archie Comics to screens for Season 2. As the person responsible for starting the apocalypse on the pages of the comic book, could we see a Walking Dead rival on TV before too long?
It’s great to hear that fresh and exciting ideas are being thrown around in the creative departments for Riverdale. Teen dramas are good for what they are, but we’ve had plenty of them with the likes of Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl. Not allowing Riverdale to fall into that same genre has to be a smart move.
Riverdale returns to screens with ‘Chapter Eight: The Outsiders’ on Thursday, March 30 in the US on The CW and Friday, March 31 on Netflix in the UK.
