Based on the characters from Archie Comics and produced by Berlanti Productions, Riverdale is the brand new comic book mystery series that offers a subversive take on the surreality of small-town life.

KJ Apa stars as Archie; a man who returns to school in better shape than ever before, catching the eyes of the girls (and some of the boys) in attendance. Together with his friends, he’s enjoying what looks on the surface to be an uncomplicated life. Below that though there is a lot of drama, twists and turns that continue cropping up along the way.

Now, Riverdale’s Josie and the Pussycats have done their best to add a little spice to the classic pop song ‘Sugar, Sugar’, with the brand new performance airing during tonight’s (February 2) episode of the series.

Featuring lead vocals from series lead Ashleigh Murray (Josie), the new cover is a recording of the 2009 single ‘Candy Girl (Sugar Sugar) by Inner Circle, featuring Flo Rida. That song itself was inspired by The Archies’ iconic 1969 hit, ‘Sugar, Sugar’ from The Archie Show.

Executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa commented: “The hit song ‘Sugar, Sugar’ has always been a huge part of Archie’s history, so we knew we had to include it in Riverdale in some way. Since Archie’s just starting his musical journey when we meet him, we thought it would be a fun reinvention to have Josie and the Pussycats perform an updated version of ‘Sugar, Sugar’ – with an assist from Riverdale High’s cheerleaders and resident mean girl Cheryl Blossom.”

Ashleigh Murray added: “As if stepping into the shoes of a fiery icon like Josie wasn’t enough, I was gifted the opportunity to reimagine and rock out on the classic ‘Sugar, Sugar’. And boy, was it sweet.”
