Archie Comics have been telling stories for almost 80 years now, with one of their most popular characters, Archie coming to the small screen in dark television adaptation Riverdale. Though those behind the new series have a huge back catalogue to draw upon, they’re switching up many of the relationships that have been pre-established in the comic book world, hoping to give first time viewers and long-time fans a fresh and exciting new look into their world.

This week, a brand new first look promo clip has been revealed, showing Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie (K.J. Apa) at their local diner, where they bump into mysterious new girl Veronica (Camila Mendes). The three quickly engage in conversation, but tension is quick to arise when Betty’s jealousy begins to creep in. Having just been about to tell Archie about her personal feelings for him, Betty won’t be happy to see a stunning new girl on the block; especially when she can make her potential lover laugh within just seconds of meeting him.

Despite a rivalry looking set to take place, it’s already been confirmed that the two female characters won’t be spending the majority of their on screen time fighting over a boy. Instead the creators are hoping to bring less stereotypical stories to the forefront, pulling back from the comic books portrayal of the girls’ bitter rivalry and adding their own touch to the story.

Riverdale premieres in the US on The CW on Thursday, January 26 and comes to the UK the day after on Netflix.
