Rik Mayall in Jonathan Creek

British actor and comedian Rik Mayall has died aged just 56, his management team have confirmed.

After playing Rick in The Young Ones alongside friend Adrian Edmondson, the pair later went on to star in sitcom Bottom and film Guest House Paradiso.

Mayall also played the lead in Drop Dead Fred.

Previously appearing in shows The New Statesman and Black Adder, he quickly became one of the UK's most-loved comedians.

A statement which is expected to give details surrounding his death will come "in the fullness of time." according to his management Brunskill.
