The 80-year-old star - who played the iconic Victor Meldrew from 1990 until 2000 - is said to be in a stable condition after suffering a cardiac arrest on Wednesday (10.08.16).

His agent, John Grant, confirmed the news of Richard's health scare and revealed the actor is currently being cared for in hospital, according to the Guardian newspaper.

Richard's health troubles come shortly after he admitted he initially rejected his most memorable on-screen role, revealing the part of Victor Meldrew almost went to Les Dawson instead.

He said in July: "I was in my early 50s and Victor was 60. I turned it down.

"I think Les Dawson was being considered. A very funny man - but I don't know if he could have played Victor."

Richard had, in fact, been set to reprise the famous character in a one-man-show at the Edinburgh Festival this month.

However, his heart attack means he will not now be able to fulfil that ambition anytime soon.

In addition to starring in the BBC sitcom, Richard also appeared in 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em', 'Doctor Who' and 'Mr Bean'.
