The acclaimed filmmaker - who co-created the hit sitcom alongside Rowan Atkinson - has revealed that the hapless funnyman could soon make his long-awaited return to the spotlight.

He told the ITV documentary 'Happy Birthday Mr Bean': "Old Bean is what we’re now thinking of doing. He’s always had a kind of grumpy selfishness which might adapt well."

Rowan, 66, is also open to the idea of reprising the character.

He said: "I still like him, I still find him funny and think I can still perform him. Never say never."

'Mr. Bean' proved to be a huge success when it aired on ITV in the early 90s, which led to two feature films and an animated series.

Rowan also reprised the character for the opening ceremony of the London Olympics in 2012.

Meanwhile, the comedy star previously admitted he finds playing Mr Bean to be "stressful and exhausting".

He explained: "It’s easier for me to perform the character vocally than visually.

"I don’t much enjoy playing him. The weight of responsibility is not pleasant. I find it stressful and exhausting and I look forward to the end of it."

What's more, the comedy star revealed that another of his most-famous characters - Edmund Blackadder - could soon make a return to TV screens.

Rowan confessed that a 'Blackadder' comeback is "certainly not impossible".

The actor - who starred alongside Tony Robinson and Stephen Fry in the iconic comedy series - added: "That's about as optimistic as I can be, and I'd rather not speculate on when it could be set."
