The 61-year-old actor is known for his "hard man" roles since portraying Carlin in the 1979 film 'Scum', but his pal and star of the ITV drama, Amanda Redman, has revealed the 'Sweeney' star has a softer side and is often left in tears after watching the weekly programme.
Amanda - who portrays Dr. Lydia Fonseca - has admitted she thinks it's fascinating that so many males tune in to watch each week.
In an interview with whatsontv.co.uk, she admitted: "What I think surprised me more than anything was the fact that so many men liked it, this Sunday night slot tends to be very female-orientated, but lots of men loved it.
"The trainers in my gym were the worst, every Monday I'd go in and they'd go; 'You're killing me, I can't bear it!'
"My great friend Ray Winstone absolutely loved it and never missed an episode even though it made him cry every week!"
As for the future of 'The Good Karma Hospital', Amanda said: "If it's successful and ITV wants it back again there's no reason why it can't go on for however long people want to do it."
Amanda, 60, was over the moon by the response to the first series.
She said: "I did it because I liked it so much but that's never a guarantee for an audience liking it, but it's lovely when it does find an audience."
'The Good Karma Hospital' follows a disillusioned doctor, Ruby Walker [Amrita Acharia], who heads for South India hoping to make a fresh start. The series is shot in Unawatuna in southern Sri Lanka
The second series kicks off on ITV on Sunday (19.03.18) at 9pm.
