The 56-year-old actor will play Elzevir Block in the new Sky1 family drama, which sees him lead a local band of smugglers in the small Dorset village of Moonfleet and develop a blossoming friendship with a young John Trenchard (Anueurin Barnard).

The show - which has been written by Ashley Pharoah - sees the pair go on an adventure in search of a fabled lost diamond.

Ray - who starred in 'Great Expectations' in 2011 - said: "I'm incredibly excited to be working with Sky - I can't wait to start filming and it's a real honour to be bringing such an epic adventure story to life."

Sophie Cookson is also set to grace the screens when she joins the cast as John's first love, Grace, who is the daughter of anti-smuggling magistrate, Mohune (Ben Chaplin) and Omid Djalili will appear as diamond merchant, Aldobrand.

'Inbetweeners' star Martin Trenaman will star as the Turnkey and 'Silent Witness' actor Anthony Ofoegbu and Lorcan Cranitch will complete the cast by playing Elzevir's smugglers, Meech and Loder.

Filming for the two-part series - which will consist of two 60-minute episodes - will kick off this summer in Dublin and surrounding areas and will air exclusively on Sky1 HD later this year.
