The 59-year-old actress - who has played the housekeeper to the Grantham family since the ITV period drama first began in 2010 - has hinted her character may not get her happy ending despite Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) popping the question at the end of the fifth series.

Asked if Mrs. Hughes has a nice dress for the wedding at the launch of the sixth and final series of 'Downton Abbey', Phyllis told BANG Showbiz: "What wedding?

"Well I mean the intention is what it is but whether or not it ever comes to a fruition..."

Phyllis' co-star Joanne Froggatt - who plays lady's maid Anna Bates - added: "There's a drama about ... There's a drama about everything."

Phyllis and Joanne also insisted that just because this is the final series, not all of the characters will get their happy ever afters.

Phyllis scoffed: "Of course not, we're talking [writer] Julian Fellowes land here. He's mixing it up a bit here and there along the way so nothing's plan sailing I would say."

Joanne agreed, adding: "It never is, it's 'Downton Abbey'! Nothing can run smoothly because it's a drama and it's 'Downton Abbey' and nobody wants it to run smoothly.

We all want to go on that journey don't we? For another series. So we will be taken on that journey for everybody."

The sixth and final series of 'Downton Abbey' begins on ITV at 9pm on September 20.
