Steven Moffat hasn't ruled out casting a female Doctor in 'Doctor Who' in the future.

The showrunner of the BBC One sci-fi series - who has just cast Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth titular Time Lord - admits it wasn't the right time for a woman to play the famous time-traveller because there were so many people against the idea, but he hinted it could happen at some point in the programme's lifetime.

He said: "It's absolutely narratively possible and when it's the right decision, maybe we'll do it. It didn't feel to me, right now, right. I didn't feel enough people wanted it.

"Oddly enough most people who said they were dead against it - and I know I'll get into trouble for saying this - were women. Saying, 'No, no, don't make him a woman!' Not that I was influenced by that. I'm influenced by nothing. Obviously."

Steven even poked fun at Dame Helen Mirren - who played Queen Elizabeth in 2006 drama movie 'The Queen' - after she called for the Time Lord, who has been played solely by men in the past, to be portrayed by a "gay, black, female" actress.

He said: "It's time that a man played the queen. Step aside for a man."
