The creator of the hugely popular period drama - which will end with the upcoming sixth series with plans for a big screen continuation - has opened up on the possibility of more television projects.

Asked about a potential film series, he told BBC News: "It's so bizarre with 'Peaky', because you never know. You never know what's going to develop from it.

"We're talking about... I don't like the word spin-offs, but TV series that are going to be inspired by and include characters from 'Peaky.' "

And Steven has also held talks about a ballet show based on the programme, although he has ruled out writing or physically appearing in the production.

He added: "I've also been approached to do 'Peaky: The Ballet', which I'm really keen to do.

"Not me personally, to write it or dance in it. But to put together a story that's expressed through ballet."

The screenwriter and director noted his initial plan was to wrap up 'Peaky Blinders' after seven seasons, but the coronavirus pandemic laid waste to those plans.

He said: "The original intention was to do seven series, but COVID has stolen a year from us.

"And we felt what would be a great idea is to, almost in place of that seventh series, is to go onto the big screen."

The programme sees Cillian Murphy play Tommy Shelby, the leader of the notorious Shelby family who have risen to prominence and power in post-First World War Birmingham during the first five series, but they have picked up many enemies along the way.

Executive producer Caryn Mandabach admitted earlier this week that the show will "most definitely live on".

She said: "Thank you to all the 'Peaky' fans who have been so unwaveringly supportive and patient.

"Steve’s scripts are incredible and mark the end of an epic story that has entranced audiences since it first started in 2013, but the world of 'Peaky Blinders' will most definitely live on."
