The former England footballer has previously held talks with bosses of the ITV show and while an appearance is yet to materialise, he would be up for it this year after he took part in 'L'Isola dei Famosi', which he was forced to drop out of due to a shoulder injury.

He said: "I suffer a little bit from claustrophobia and snakes. I'm not too scared about flying now.

"I've had a few interviews for that show.

"I just thought this thing, ['L'Isola dei Famosi'], because of lockdown ... I think I took advantage of lockdown.

"But yeah that ['I'm A Celebrity'] is something I would look forward to doing, but I'll leave that to my manager."

Paul - who is known as Gazza - appears to have a few tricks up his sleeve about how to sneak in some much-needed grub on the show, after doing so on the Italian programme.

The 53-year-old star had to wear a sling after injuring his shoulder - but he managed to make the most out of it.

He said: "I hid five biscuits in my sling on the show, they weren't supposed to know.

"I remember the doctor saying, 'Paul, we've got to put that sling on properly,' and I went, 'No, no, don't touch it, it's OK.'

"I was more worried about losing five biscuits I hid on the show."

Paul had to fly off the island for a short time after dislocating his shoulder, but he was "more than happy" about going to hospital because he was able to get some much-needed food.

Speaking on 'Good Morning Britain', he added: "I've had loads of operations, so I knew when I get to the hospital I'm going to get some food, some cigarettes and a coffee. I'm more than happy."

However, he nearly met his maker en route to the hospital.

He recently said: "I'm scared of flying at the best of times and always say a little prayer before take off. But I was chatting to the pilot as we were taking off so I must have forgotten my seat belt.

"We are over the sea when he pulls to the right and the door flies open and I lurch towards it. I've never been so frightened. My career and family flashed in front of my eyes - but I managed to hold on and slide the door closed.

"I told the pilot what happened and we just exchanged glances as if to say, 'F****** hell, that was close'. I thought if I fell out into the sea I might survive the drop but I was scared there might be sharks.

"I could see the headlines. Fat bloke who was good at football falls out of a helicopter and is eaten by a shark."
