Orange is the New Black will officially return to Netflix for its sixth season on July 27, 2018, the streaming platform have revealed. Not only that, but their slogan for the new batch of episodes has been unveiled, and seems to usher in an entirely new era for the fan-favourite characters: “Bye Bye Litchfield – it’s a whole new world!”
For five seasons to-date, audiences have watched OITNB take place in Litchfield Penitentiary, but after the chaotic events of season 5 which saw the prisoners take control of the prison, putting everybody in risk after much corruption and deceit, they’re now all being moved to new confinements. Exactly where that will be remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear – things will never be the same for the OITNB ladies again.
One hint suggests that the women are “headed to the Max”; a shortened name for the maximum security facility which is on the same land as the all-female prison. Whether or not they’ll all be in the same place however remains to be seen. At the end of season 5, we saw prisoners split up and put into different vans. It could be that some of these old friends never see one another ever again.
Likely reflecting the real world, it would be a shocker not to see the women heavily involved in the riots pay a major price for their part in the destruction and takedown of Litchfield. Season 6 of OITNB could be the most devastating to-date; both for the characters in the show and the viewers watching from the comfort of their own homes.
Orange is the New Black season 6 is available on Netflix from July 27, 2018. Seasons 1-5 are available on the streaming service now.
