The 31-year-old singer has been touted to take over control of the TARDIS from Jodie Whittaker when she exits her role as the Thirteenth Doctor in 2022, and although he insists he has had no talks about the sci-fi role he is honoured that his name is even in the frame.

Speaking to Metro at the MTV EMAs, he said: "I was so flattered and inspired by that but I’m definitely not the next Doctor Who. It’s an amazing show and I was quite flattered that people thought I might be able to do it."

It is not the first time the 'King' hitmaker has played down rumours that he has opened talks with BBC bosses about becoming the new Time Lord.

He told GQ: "I thought it was quite glamorous and exciting when there was a rumour about it, when The Sun reported that I was in final talks for being the next Doctor. That was news to me. I know how much that part means to people and was very flattered and touched that people thought I might be. But I can categorically tell you that I am not the next Doctor.”

If the Years and Years singer was to become the Fourteenth Doctor, he would be reunited with 'It's A Sin' creator Russell T Davies who is returning to 'Doctor Who' as showrunner once Chris Chibnall departs the job.

Russell - who cast Olly as Ritchie Tozer in his Channel 4 drama about the 1980s AIDS crisis - was responsible for bringing the show back to screens in 2005 before stepping away 12 years ago.

The screenwriter will be responsible for overseeing 'Doctor Who' when it celebrates its 60th Anniversary in 2023 and beyond.

Speaking about his sensational return, Russell recently said: "I’m beyond excited to be back on my favourite show.

"But we’re time-travelling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now."
