Olivia Colman puts off going to the shops to buy milk in case people recognise her.

The 39-year-old actress - who played DS Ellie Miller in popular murder mystery drama 'Broadchurch' - gets "embarrassed" when members of the public spot her in the street, so much so she tries not to go out to buy any food or drink unless she really has to.

Olivia - who played Sophie Chapman in sitcom 'Peep Show' - said: "Before, I'd get somebody every day going, 'I like Peep Show,' or something. Now that happens quite a lot more, to the extent I get quite embarrassed.

"Now I only do journeys I have to, because I don't know what to do.

"I've never had a bad experience, it's just funny that someone knows your face but you don't know theirs.

"It's a bit peculiar and I'm sure I'll get better at it. But if I need a pint of milk, I'll wait until I really need to go. Where I live, everybody knows me so that's fine, but away from home it's slightly daunting - and I'm a bit of a chicken."

The brunette beauty - who won two TV BAFTAs for her roles in comedy 'Twenty Twelve' and drama 'The Accused' earlier this year - admits she feels "eternally honoured" to land parts in different genres, but resents female writers who go with a male lead just to get publicity.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, she added: "I've got love for female writers but they're forced not to write well for women because I think a lot of people think it's not appealing to have a female lead.

"A lot of female writers I know have to have a male lead to get their writing seen. It's s**t."
