Nick Knowles counts himself “very lucky” he has been able to confide in his close friends and family when he has experienced “tough times”.
The ‘DIY SOS’ host has been candid about his mental health in the past following a series of hard-hitting events in his personal life after splitting with his ex-wife Jessica, their miscarriage and her cancer diagnosis.
Speaking at the premiere of British film 'Kindling' at London's Curzon Soho on Tuesday (18.04.23), he exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “I’ve been very lucky over the years because I have a brother who I’m very close to, I’ve had friends that I’m very close to, who undoubtedly have helped me through tough times.”
Nick thinks it’s important to address the gender suicide gap and change the narrative that men don’t talk about their feelings.
He added: “I’ve been very lucky. I see it all the time in people I work with, people I love, so I’m very much aware of the difficulties, I make programmes about it, so it is important that men find someone to talk to but It’s not always easy.
“You know if you’re a farmer out on the field all day who do you talk to? If you’re a builder working on people’s houses on your own all the time you don’t talk to the customer do you? It’s not always easy to find somebody but it’s important though.”
The TV presenter encouraged other stars not to get caught up in the smoke and mirrors of show business.
He said: “Don’t get caught up in the party thing because it’s all smoke and mirrors really and it can disappear as fast as it arrives.
"You need to keep your feet on the ground and stay in contact with people who you care about and can trust.
“It’s important to stay humble as it’s easy to get carried away with things when people are telling you how amazing you are. It’s important to make sure you have those friends who will tell you you’re not when you’re not. It’s important to keep friends who really know you so they can tell you when you’re losing the plot.
“Make sure you don’t lose your real friends as you’re gathering new ones. I’m still friends with people I went to school with. A lot of the people I’m friends with aren’t showbizzy people they’re camera men and directors and builders.”
'Kindling' is a poignant British celebration of friendship, based on true events. The film follows a group of young men who return to their hometown to turn their friend Sid’s final summer into a celebration of life, love and friendship while facing mortality.
