The 'X Factor' judge is reportedly being lined up to host a new version of the hit show - that was axed in 2006 - alongside his fellow BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac, the Daily Star newspaper reports.
The news comes after it was revealed BBC bosses are keen to give the show a 'Top Gear'-style makeover.
The BBC's director of music Bob Shennan said: "'Top Gear' was reborn and reinvented to be about much, much more than cars.
"I guess that's a good analogy for what we're talking about. We're not just talking about straight music; we're talking about extra elements and uniqueness. If just bringing back 'Top of the Pops' was such a straightforward and obvious thing to do, somebody on some channel would have done it. The challenge is to find a new way to bring it to mainstream audiences. We're going to have to find a new twist."
It's thought the success of 'Hello' singer Adele's special 'Adele at The BBC' - which aired last month - made bosses aware of the demand for a weekly music show.
Meanwhile, BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra controller Ben Cooper recently revealed he wanted to fill the void left by 'The Voice's departure from BBC One to ITV by "bringing back a youth music weekly programme to prime time BBC".
He said previously: "That's the Holy Grail... The music industry would like a weekly moment to showcase the best new British music. You want a moment that will feature on Gogglebox, that family-on-the-sofa moment."
And while plans for a revamped version of the show are yet to be confirmed, two specials hosted by Fearne Cotton and Reggie Yates are set to air on Christmas Day and New Year's Day with stars including Little Mix, Rita Ora and James Bay performing.
