Michaela Coel was among the big winners at the RTS Programme Awards 2021.
The 33-year-old actress, screenwriter, and director came out on top during the annual television award ceremony on Tuesday (16.03.21), as her hit BBC One and HBO series ‘I May Destroy You’ took home a total of three trophies.
Michaela herself was the recipient of the Actor – Female award for her role in the comedy-drama series as Arabella Essiedu as well as bagging the Drama Writer gong, whilst the series itself was named best Mini-Series.
There were also two wins for comedian Joe Lycett, who took home the Presenter award for ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ as well as his show ‘Joe Lycett’s Got Your Back’ being named best Formatted Popular Factual.
Also receiving two trophies was fellow comedian Mae Martin, whose comedy series ‘Feel Good’ earned her the Breakthrough Award and the award for Comedy Writer, which she was awarded alongside her co-writer Joe Hampson.
Elsewhere, ‘Small Axe’ star Shaun Parkes took home the gong for Actor – Male, whilst Comedy Performance – Male went to Youssef Kerkour for ‘Home’, and the female equivalent was handed to ‘Famalam’ star Gbemisola Ikumelo.
Grayson Perry won the Arts award for his series ‘Grayson’s Art Club’, whilst popular daytime series ‘Loose Women’ was named the recipient of the Daytime Programme trophy.
The RTS named BBC One its Channel of the Year, after recognising BBC medical drama ‘Casualty’ as the winner of Soap and Continuing Drama, as well as giving the Single Drama gong to ‘Elizabeth Is Missing’.
The final awards of the night were special recognition trophies, which saw Anne Mensah – the Vice President of Original Series at Netflix who has previously worked for Sky and the BBC – named the recipient of the Judges’ Award, and Russell T. Davies honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award.
