Best known for playing Marley Rose in seasons four and five of Glee, the young actress has proved she has a stellar voice, but just how will she cope when she goes on to don the famous cape and 'S' logo?

Earlier this month, CBS entertainment chairman Nina Tassler had called the Supergirl show a "passion" project for the network.

She explained at the TCA press event: "We heard the pitch and realised she embodied so many of the qualities and characteristics of the classic female heroines on the network."

"It's a story and coming-of-age opportunity for us. We fell in love with the pitch."

Being developed by Greg Berlanti, the producer has already proved his worth following work on Arrow and The Flash for The CW.

Berlanti has in the past hinted all three shows could crossover, given that The CW is part-owned by CBS Corporation.

"I think... like if I were watching them, I would want to see that. But we have to get so many things right to make a good show and so much of it is luck."

DC Comics characters Jimmy Olsen, Cat Grant and Toyman are all confirmed to feature in the series, but their representative actors have not yet been confirmed.

Rumoured contenders for Superman's cousin Kara Zor-El before now have included Claire Holt and soap star Gemma Atkinson.
