In the three-part series 'Trailblazers', the trio will aim to retrace the footsteps of intrepid explorer Isabella Bird.

During the 19th century, where women still faced oppression, the solo traveller crossed the American Wild West where she came upon grizzly bears and rattle snakes, and climbed the peaks of mountains in extreme weather conditions.

The three generations of women will come together to emulate Isabella’s 800 mile journey and 14,000ft mountain summit in Colorado, from her 1873 novel ‘A Lady’s Life In The Rocky Mountains’.

Mel said: “I strive from being around really strong, independent opinionated women. So going away with these two amazing ladies, following the path of this unsung forgotten hero, I thought ‘Wow!’ It’s hectic, informational, and a lot of fun.”

Emily added: “Isabella didn’t even wear any shoes when horseback riding through the mountains. I had a Spice Girl galloping behind me!

“I come into my own when I’m physically and mentally challenged, when I’m stripped of my comforts, I always seem to find a better version of me.”

A teaser shared: “In this fun, entertaining, and sometimes poignant adventure series, Ruby, Mel and Emily want to pay homage to a forgotten pioneer, as they explore the people, places, and customs of an ever-changing America.

“They’ll challenge themselves in one of the world’s toughest terrains as they journey by any means possible through Colorado’s wild and awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains. After sharing raucous camp side tales and touching stories from their own past, the intrepid trio will reflect on how much has really changed since Isabella’s original journey.”

The first episode of ‘Trailblazers’ will air next Monday November 28 at 9pm on BBC2.
