Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise Coleman

Matt Smith has said he would've liked another year on Doctor Who to spend some time with Jenna Coleman.

The 31-year-old actor quit his role as the titular Time Lord in the sci-fi show at the end of last year, but he now believes the chemistry between him and his co-star - who played his on-screen companion Clara Oswald - was strong enough to carry through to 2014.

In the DVD extra for the Christmas special episode, 'The Time of the Doctor', Matt tells Jenna: "Part of me genuinely feels that I sort of wish we have had another go at it, another year, because I feel we have really come on and sort of evolved."

However, Matt - who played the Doctor for four years - insists he bowed out of the programme in the best way possible because he had lots of "fun" filming his final scenes in the Christmas special.

He explained: "We have had a good time making it [the episode]. It's been really fun to make it."

However, the hunky star - who took over the lead role from David Tennant in 2009 - has now been replaced by 'The Thick Of It' actor Peter Capaldi, and admits shooting his last scenes and introducing the new Time Lord was an emotional experience.

He previously said: "It was a great shoot - a sad one for me, but I think it'll be a fitting send-off and a fitting introduction for Peter."
