Steven Moffat has gained praise from Matt Smith for adding to the "mythology" of 'Doctor Who' in the 50th anniversary special.
The 31-year-old actor is delighted with the way the show runner has managed to incorporate complex storylines into the sci-fi series while keeping fans hooked.
Speaking during the Eleventh Hour panel discussion at the 'Doctor Who' Official 50th Celebration at London's ExCel Centre today (22.11.13), Matt said: "What I think is clever about it is that Steven has managed to add something to the mythology of the story. Which, firstly, is a testament to the longevity of the show but also to him as a writer and I think for me as a 'Who' fan I love all that stuff."
Meanwhile, Moffat was blown away by the atmosphere while shooting the 50th anniversary and he liked watching David Tennant back in character as the Time Lord as it brought back memories.
Moffat explained: "It just wasn't like working on any other show. 'Doctor Who' always feels pretty exceptional at any time and this was the 'Doctor Who' episode that felt different from anything else. David back in Costume playing the Doctor, it was like watching live archive footage. And then you're actually working with John Hurt and he actually knows your name and looks at you. It was astonishing. But it was also frightening, and as you'll see tomorrow night, whatever else it is the episode is the most ambitious one we've done.
Jenna-Louise Coleman added: "For me, I got to turn up everyday for work and see three Doctors in costume and I got to hang out with them so I was just hyper, really, for the whole thing. It felt too celebratory for nerves. The atmosphere felt like we all knew we were making something very special."
The 50th anniversary special will air on BBC One on Saturday (23.11.13) and will simulcast in over 90 countries which will make it the largest drama simulcast in television history. It will be dubbed & subtitled in 15 different languages and will be shown in over 1,500 cinemas across the world in 3D.
'The Day of the Doctor' will be released on DVD on December 2.
