Coming to Netflix in September, Luke Cage's first season has some lofty expectations from fans across the globe following the hugely successful Daredevil and Jessica Jones series which have already debuted on the platform.

With both Daredevil and Jessica Jones being utterly different beasts whilst existing in the same universe, it looks as if Luke Cage will also be branching out into unfamiliar yet rewarding territory when it comes to the small screen.

Speaking to EW, the series' head executive producer and showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker said: "It's very sophisticated. I mean, it's got a 90s hip-hop vibe, but it's really forward-thinking. We have [composer and music producer] Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad doing the scoring for us. We have a lot of different musical appearances, but at the same time, we've got the Marvel action. We've got drama. I would like this to be, I mean, I know this is heavy but, The Wire of Marvel television, because we really deal with a lot of different issues."

As one of HBO's most successful series of all time, The Wire is responsible for helping launch the careers of some of the world's most respected actors, including Michael B. Jordan, Dominic West and Idris Elba. It's likely that Luke Cage, if following The Wire's example will be dealing with some deep subject matter throughout.

Coker also chatted about giving the fans what they want in terms of remaining faithful to the Luke Cage they may know from the comic book world.

He explained: "We were trying not to be on the nose. We're going to give all the fans all the things they want. But we've got to bring it up a bit and step into the current time. So we're going to make sure everybody's happy, but don't expect a yellow shirt every day. Let's put it that way... We brought it to mustard. We started there. We knocked it down a bit. Not so bright."

Luke Cage season 1 will come to Netflix on September 30, joining Daredevil seasons 1 and 2, and Jessica Jones season 1 which are all already available. Iron Fist and The Defenders will follow, but dates are yet to be revealed.
