Financial advisor Martin Lewis scooped the first Expert gong at the 2022 National Television Awards as the cost of living crisis intensifies.
He said he didn’t expect to win as one of his fellow nominees in the new category was Sir David Attenborough, along with Jay Blades and Kaleb Cooper.
The finance journalist turned Moneysupermarket.com founder told the crowd at London’s Wembley Area on Thursday (13.10.22) when picking up his trophy: “When you’re up against a treasure like David Attenborough, you don’t expect to win. Whoever said we’ve had enough of experts, we haven’t. We need them more than ever.
“It’s been a pretty horrible year financially. I’m afraid the next year, with the mortgage problem and the knock on to rents, is going to be pretty bad and we need someone to get a grip on the economy and put things better.
“I’ll leave that to my show which is back on next Tuesday – tonight this nerd is going to party.”
Other big winners at the ceremony included Anton Du Beke for TV Judge, ‘Peaky Blinders’ for Returning Drama, Lenny Henry for the Special Recognition Award and ITV’s ‘Thriller Point’ for Best New Drama, accepted by actress Vicky McClure.
She said: “What’s incredible about the NTAs – it’s the fans and viewers and that’s what matters in television.
“I want to say thank you to Jed Mercurio (show writer) and to our wonderful directors and everyone who worked on this.”
Thanking his wife Hannah Summers and executive producer Sarah James for his win, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ judge Anton said when picking up his award: “Thank you to everyone who voted, who’s watching the show. Thank you to my wife.
“Sarah James... let me tell you about Sarah James. I love this woman, she’s the great thing to happen to television, thank you for giving me the job. That’s why I love her, I won’t deny. Thank you so much.”
Members of the England lionesses football squad presented ‘Peaky Blinders’ with Returning Drama, with show creator and screenwriter Steven Knight saying in his acceptance speech about plans to turn it into a film: “Thank you to all our fans. It’s been a great journey. It’s become a global thing and the most important thing is the British fans who spotted it early, made it what it is and that’s what this is all about.
“We’re going to keep going, we’re going to make a film, we start shooting in spring.”
Matt Lucas presented the Comedy Award, which went to Ricky Gervais’ ‘After Life’.
Ricky – who has previously advised award winners when presenting the Golden Globes to keep their victory speeches short and devoid of political and ‘woke’ statements – said: “Thank you so much – a genuine surprise.
“I’ll keep It brief – my feet are killing me. Thank you to the amazing cast and crew. Thank you to Netflix and thank you to everyone who voted.”
Emmerdale took best Serial Drama over shows including EastEnders and Neighbours, which was nominated after its 37 years on TV ended in July.
Late The Wanted singer Tom Parker, who died aged 33 in March following a battle with brain cancer, was honoured a posthumous nomination for his documentary, ‘Inside My Head’.
Winner of the category was ITV host Kate Garraway’s documentary about caring for her Covid-stricken husband Derek, believed to be Britain’s longest suffering patient with the disease.
