The 50-year-old Money Saving Expert was interviewing Saleem Shafi, deputy chief executive officer of financial advice charity Money Buddies, alongside his co-host Susanna Reid when he made an incredible gesture to donate 10 per cent of the £975,000 Saleem admitted would make a "big difference" to the aid organisation.

When asked how much money is needed to help people, Saleem replied: "It's interesting. I had a meeting yesterday and I think £975,000 would make a big difference to our charity in terms of how many people we can help."

Martin replied: "I've given to you before. I'll give 10 per cent of that."

Saleem said: "Thank you, Martin."

Susanna then said: "Thank you for generosity. I think we'll all pitch in."

Also during the show, Martin fought back tears as he discussed how he was nearly the same age as Prince Harry when they both lost their mothers following road traffic accidents.

Martin's mum, Susan Lewis, was killed by a lorry while out horse riding – three days before Martin turned 12 years old - while Princess Diana died following a car crash in Paris in August 1997 when Harry was 12.

While discussing reports that Princes William and Harry are to walk alongside their father King Charles behind Queen Elizabeth's coffin ahead of her funeral, following her death last week aged 96 - as they did at the funeral of their mother Princess Diana - Martin said: "I wasn't going to say this on air but it resonates with me very powerfully for someone who lost his mother at the same age as Harry in a road traffic accident.

"I find it very difficult to watch. Thank goodness I wasn't made to walk behind. I didn't even go. It does bring back some..."

Martin then urged Susanna to "carry on" as he composed himself.
