Filming is already underway on a next run of Diane Morgan's sitcom, and as well as playing the titular character, the 'After Life' actress has also written and directed the series.

She said: "At this time of debate about the future of the BBC, a second series of 'Mandy' could not be more timely.

"If anything proves the worth of the corporation it's a show about a woman who wants to breed Doberman pinchers.

"It's not something you'd get on Amazon Prime or BFI Player."

Diane's 'Motherland' co-star Anna Maxwell Martin and Hollywood actor Sir Tom Courtenay are among the new cast for the upcoming series.

Richard Hope, Nick Mohammed, Alexei Sayle, Jo Hartley, Peter McDonald, Kate Robbins, Nigel Planer, Roger Sloman, and Charlie Chuck will also appear in the show, and TV presenter Konnie Huq, 'Dragons’ Den’ star Deborah Meaden and space boffin Dr Brian Cox will all play themselves.

Returning cast members include Michelle Greenidge as Lola, Mandy’s friend and confidante in the local nail bar, and Tom Basden as Mandy’s exasperated benefits officer, as well as Alistair Green, Mark Silcox, and Michael Spicer.

The new series will once again see Mandy dream big, but with small success, as she attempts to find fulfilment in a number of short-lived jobs.

She becomes a tour guide, goes on a reality show and gets thrown in at the deep end, both actually and metaphorically, when she tries to learn to swim.

Gregor Sharp, BBC Commissioning Editor, added: "Diane has created an instantly iconic comedy character in Mandy and we can’t wait to see what trouble follows her in this new series."
