The 50-year-old actor - who brought character Gareth Keenan to life in the classic BBC One workplace comedy between 2001 and 2003 - is keen to cast Stephen Merchant and Ricky Gervais, who wrote and starred in the sitcom, in his revamped version of 'Worzel Gummidge'.

The actor - who writes, directs and plays the titular scarecrow - told The Sun newspaper's TV Biz column: “To put someone like Ricky Gervais into the world of Scatterbrook would be great - it would certainly be an interesting casting. I’ve been saying for years I’d love to work with Ricky again.”

But Mackenzie admitted to not having been "in touch” with the 'After Life' star, and he is not even sure Ricky knows he has been working on the remake of the classic 70s show, which starred Jon Pertwee and is based on the children’s book series of the same name by Barbara Euphan Todd.

Mackenzie said: “I haven’t been in touch with him for a while and I don’t know if he’s even seen 'Worzel Gummidge'."

However, the ‘Detectorists’ star said the pair “laughed at the same things”, so hopefully he would love it as much as he does.

He quipped: “Ricky and I got on very well because we laughed at the same things. Hopefully 'Worzel Gummidge' is something that friends like him would find funny.”

The 'Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of The Black Pearl’ actor recently got thinking about Stephen after watching his new “brilliant” BBC One show ‘The Outlaws’.

He said: “I was watching Stephen’s new show and just thinking about how we’d all gone off and done our thing, and it’s brilliant and we’re all still making a living in this industry and creating stuff.

"But I’d like to work with Stephen again - he’s a brilliant bloke."
