Lee Mack slammed female comics, insisting they are not cut out to be stand-up comedians.

The household name and panellist on hit show 'Would I Lie to You?' has said that females doing stand-up are less interested in "showing off" than their male couterparts, making them less suited to the job.

Speaking on Radio 4's 'Desert Island Discs', he said: "I am only quoting scientific reports.

"When men sit around and talk, they are very competitive. One person will tell an anecdote and the next person will try to top that. When you get six women together, they share a lot more.

"They will be far more interested in what the other person has to say. The conservation is more interactive and less about individually showing off."

Despite his comments, the 45-year-old comedian - who wrote and starred in sitcom 'Not Going Out' - insists there should be more female comics in the industry.

He added: "The problem isn't that there's not enough women in panel games. The problem is there's not enough women in comedy in general."
