Laura Hamilton offered some home improvement suggestions

The 'A Place in the Sun' presenter has advised the areas of the house people might want to address over the bank holiday weekend, after a survey found half of homeowners plan to dabble in DIY during the upcoming longweekends, particularly because 26% are choosing to invest in their current properties to boost their values further down the line.

She said: "I'm no stranger to renovating property, in fact over the last 22 years I've renovated 19 properties, including a commercial unit. So, it's safe to say I've picked up a few top tips along the way.

"It's not surprising, with the cost-of-living crisis affecting so many, that more and more homeowners are investing in home improvements, to add value to their existing properties, rather than taking on the stress and expense of moving."

Laura's suggestions included freshening up the paintwork - with her top tip being to paint the ceiling and woodwork the same colour as the walls to give a more "homely" feel - and dressing rooms carefully with well-chosen accessories such as rugs, mirrors, flowers and candles.

The property expert also advised the paint can be used to give a kitchen a facelift, simply by painting cupboard doors and drawer fronts, as well as changing the handles, in order to give the room a "fresh new lease of life" without breaking the bank.

The 40-year-old star also spoke of the importance of "kerb appeal" - tidying the outside space by reseeding a patchy lawn, pruning or planting, and jet washing walls and patios.

And finally, Laura urged people to look at their loft spaces as extra rooms, rather than dumping grounds and to consider boarding out the spaces before adding storage solutions.

She said: "Making use of untapped areas like your loft, which is often one of the largest spaces in your home, is a great way to attract potential buyers who are looking for more usable space - believe me, you can never have too much storage space.

"LoftZone and products like it are smart investments to help you do just this – creating a safe, strong, and secure storage area that means you have an organised and usable space rather than a cluttered and overwhelming dumping ground."

Laura's tips were echoed by LoftZone, who commissioned the survey.

CEO Dave Raval said: "Bank-holiday weekends for many of us are spent decluttering and reorganizing our homes – on the hunt for more space. Our research found that the average loft in the UK is 22 square metres of (often untapped) space, and 41% of us just use this space as a dumping ground for our belongings.

"By installing our StoreFloor loft boarding system, loft shelving, loft lighting and loft wardrobes you can maximise storage space, keeping your treasured possessions organised and safe.”
