The 43-year-old actress departed 'Coronation Street' in December after playing Michelle Connor for 13 years, and has now earned a spot in the upcoming fourth series of Kay Mellor's BBC drama.

A source The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column: "Landing a part in 'The Syndicate' is something of a coup for Kym, as Kay is still viewed as one of telly's top writers. And she has shown to have the pulling power to attract big-name actors to her projects, so Kym is likely to be in good company with this cast.

"This will be viewed as a prestigious first step to carving out a new chapter in her career after leaving 'Corrie'."

Kay - who created the series in 2012 - announced last month she had developed a new series of her critically-acclaimed drama, which last aired in 2015 and starred Lenny Henry.

The new series will follow the owners of Woodvale Kennels and their employees, who fear they will have to sell their beloved business before they win the lottery.

But the staff soon find out there are plenty of obstacles to overcome before they can claim their cash.

Though it is not yet known what part Kym will play in the series, she is thought to have a key role.

The former Hear'Say singer announced her departure from the cobbles in February last year, because she wanted to "explore other roles".

She landed a role in musical 'Elf' as Buddy the Elf's girlfriend Jovie, which saw her tour across the UK.

Kym said at the time: "I am delighted to be getting back on stage and joining the cast of Elf this December.

"Elf is an iconic Christmas film and having seen the musical myself last year I am very excited to be part of this fun and heart-warming family show."
