The 47-year-old actress won the coveted award for her performance in the Channel 4's 'I am Ruth', in which Kate played a single mother whose daughter becomes consumed by social media.

After receiving her award, Kate told the crowd at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London: "It has never been a harder time to be a parent. It has never been a more dangerous time to be a child in an online world.

"Let's hope that the next Online Safety Bill implements significant and seismic change that will fundamentally help towards securing the safety of all of our children by recognising and criminalising harmful content."

Kit Connor received the Leading Actor award for his performance in 'Heartstopper', Netflix's comedy-drama series.

The 19-year-old star saw off competition from Kane Robinson and Chaske Spencer to claim the accolade.

Elsewhere, 'The Traitors' - the BBC reality series hosted by Claudia Winkleman - won two awards on the night.

Claudia, 51, won the prize for Entertainment Performance, beating Jordan Stephens and Mo Gilligan to the award.

What's more, 'The Traitors' was named as the winner of the Entertainment gong.

The Channel 4 comedy series 'Derry Girls' also won two awards.

The hit TV show - which focuses on a group of teens growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland, in the 1990s - was named the Scripted Comedy award winner, while Lisa McGee was named the Best Comedy Writer.

Meanwhile, Sarah Lancashire was given the Outstanding Achievement Award.

The 58-year-old actress - who has starred in a host of hit TV shows during her career, including 'Coronation Street', 'Where the Heart Is' and 'Happy Valley' - was given a standing ovation by the audience.
