The 62-year-old actress-and-comedian will join the BBC One soap as no-nonsense Jen – an old friend of Terry 'Rocky' Cant (Brian Conley) who is called into the Queen Vic after he discovers a musical talent in the form of Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty).

Kate spoke of her excitement of joining the show and found it "surreal" to be sat in The Queen Vic pub with some of the programme's iconic characters.

The star – whose scenes will be screened next month – said: "I am so excited to be joining 'EastEnders' as Jen, we had a ball filming the scenes.

"It was surreal to be sat in The Queen Vic for my first scenes with some of the legends of Albert Square. Working alongside the team was a dream and I can't wait to see the scenes on screen."

Kate - whose daughter is TV star Emily Atack - also took to Twitter to share the news about her new role.

She wrote on the social media site: "I realise many of us will be 'Engerlanded' later so just putting this on here now.

"Delighted to be heading into the famous square.

"Even more delighted about this jacket.

"Coming soon @bbceastenders."

Kate also explained that she had enjoyed filming scenes with evil Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith).

She tweeted: "Been a blast working with the talented @_TobyAlexander who plays the baddest baddy, 'Gray' in #EastEnders.

"Guess what? He's so lovely! (Sorry to spoil it) (sic)."

Kate was also praised by her co-star Shona, who said she was in "complete awe" of Robbins.

The actress tweeted: "I'm in complete awe of you woman! Love working with you, such a talented, beautiful and generous lady! We're lucky to have you. Plus, you make me die laughing!"
