Derek Draper has been hospitalised since March when he was diagnosed with Covid-19 - which is now free of - and he said his first word in seven months last week when he whispered “pain" to his doctors. And after Kate first revealed the news over the weekend, she has now opened up further on the “miracle” moment.

She explained: "[The hospital staff] keep talking to him and they would say 'OK, we're just going to move your arm or leg' and every time they said 'Let us know if you feel pain.’ He mouthed ‘pain' … everyone stopped and stared.”

While Kate says her husband is making progress, she also admitted hearing him speak is “heart-breaking”, because she now knows he’s clearly in pain.

She added: "It is heart-breaking because he does feel pain but what it does mean is that he has been able to feel a sensation in his body and connect it with his brain and then mouth pain.

“I believe he is in there. That’s a long way from who Derek is … but it's a start.”

The 53-year-old television presenter said she is clinging onto “hope” that Derek will recover, as he’s been able to “fight” for so long.

During an appearance on ‘Good Morning Britain’ on Monday (02.11.20), she said: "The power of hope is huge but you're constantly trying to think if hope is still real.

"I was getting scared because I was thinking if it's hard for him, how hard must it be for him stuck in there. He’s been able to fight out of there."

Derek, also 53, was rushed to the hospital and put into an induced coma in March after testing positive for the virus.

He has since tested negative but must remain in hospital due to the damaging impact the virus has had on his body.
