Derek Draper has been in hospital for 12 months after first contracting coronavirus in March 2020, and he is still in intensive care battling the after-effects.

'GMB' co-host Kate plans to be Derek's primary carer, but admits she has "a fear of the reality of that life" because the dynamic of their relationship would change.

Speaking to the couple's 11-year-old son Bill on her new documentary, 'Kate Garraway: Finding Derek' - which airs tonight (23.03.21) on ITV - she says: "You know that we are hoping that dad will get better and better, but when he comes home he will probably need to be in a wheelchair, so we are trying to make it so he can do all this.

"And if I have to give up work to care for him then it is best to do it now when I am earning money.

"If he needs 24-hour care I will be the primary carer. I have a fear of the reality of that life.

"It is a completely different dynamic to our relationship."

Kate has also been comforted by Sir Elton John throughout Derek's battle, with the singing legend revealing he has been praying for the former lobbyist.

While speaking to Kate on the phone, he says: "I pray for him every night, in my prayers, and you and your family.

"He is an amazing man, please give him my love when you talk to him next time."

Kate previously admitted she had been playing Derek some of Elton's music.

Speaking in December, she said: "One of the artists that we play a lot on Smooth [the radio station where she hosts a mid-morning show] is Sir Elton John. I love 'Step into Christmas'.

"And it feels particularly special this year because he's been so personally kind to me about the situation with Derek, and we've been playing Elton's music to Derek while he's been in hospital."

In July last year, Kate revealed Elton and his husband David Furnish had been "so kind" throughout Derek's plight.

She explained: "Elton John contacted me. He got in touch, he said, 'Hi Kate, It’s Elton.'

"I was like, 'Elton ...' I think we do have a mutual friend. He was like, 'What can I do to help?' He said, 'I’m on board. I'll try and help.' He’s incredible.

"I was so desperate, because at this point it was very hard to communicate with the hospital, so I was like, 'Yes, help. Please help.'

"At that point I put the phone down, and I was like, 'That was Elton John! I think he’s going to help.' "

"He's been so kind, and David [Furnish] as well."
