The 53-year-old political advisor was struck down with COVID-19 last year and although he came home from hospital earlier this year, Kate admitted that he is "very up and down".

During Friday's (09.07.21) edition of 'Good Morning Britain', co-host Alistair Campbell told Kate: "I know your old man incredibly well. Used to work with him, occasionally against him."

And Kate, 54, joked: "Yeah I’ve heard all the stories from him, I’ve heard all the stories, he’s warned me so I’m fully braced and prepared."

When Alistair went on to ask about Derek, she replied: "He’s alright, he’s alright. He’s very up and down, we’re certainly not a long way out of the woods.

"[He came home] not because he was better, no. But being home has meant we’ve seen some things improved.

"Definitely having the family around, having the children around has provided stimulation and I think the problem is you latch on to the positives, which is good because you have to, but there’s absolutely no doubt that there’s huge challenges ahead."

Derek continues to require special round-the-clock care as he struggles to recover from COVID-19, which left him with kidney failure, damage to his liver and pancreas, and heart failure.

Kate recently revealed she was told by her husband's neurologist that Derek would have "very little chance" of a "meaningful recovery" from coronavirus if he hadn't made progress within two years.

Speaking about her previous discussion with the physician, she said: "I had already waited so long. 'How long before you know more? Not how long will it take for him to recover, because you don’t know if he can even recover, but how long before you might know more?'

"It was a confusing question, but I knew what I meant and he seemed to as well.

"After another long pause, he looked straight at me, then away. 'Well, Kate' – the first time he had used my name - 'I think it’s fair to say if he is still like this after two years we will know there is very little chance of him making any meaningful recovery.' "
