Derek Draper, 52, contracted Covid-19 in March and Kate is praying for a breakthrough after doctors warned he may never wake up from his coma.

Kate's 'Good Morning Britain' co-star Susanna Reid explained: "Derek has been in intensive care for almost three months after contracting Covid-19 in March.

"Kate is hoping for a miracle in his recovery and for him to break through. Derek is a strong, clever, insightful man devoted to his gorgeous wife and children."

Susanna has been left "heartbroken" having to watch her co-star struggle but has praised Kate and her two children Billy, 10, and Darcy, 14, for their strength during this tough time.

She wrote in her Daily Mail newspaper column: "Watching my friend Kate Garraway describing her husband Derek Draper's condition on 'Good Morning Britain' was heartbreaking.

"She has such strength even to be able to put into words what she and their children are going through."

Last week, Kate gave an update on her husband's condition as doctors prepared her for the "second worst case scenario".

Kate said: "There was a terrible phone call two weeks ago from a senior doctor in the intensive care unit. He asked me what my greatest fear was.

"I said, 'Derek dying' and he replied, 'Well, now I think I have to give you a second worst case scenario, which is that he never changes from this. That he is locked in this forever'. He said, 'I'm not telling you this to scare you. It's because we don't know if he can recover. We'll only know over the coming weeks and months'.

"I threw up, there and then. People had said to me before that they thought he was going to die, but not that he might stay in this state."
