The 'Rum Diary' actor is a huge fan of the British period drama and actress Phyllis Logan - who plays head housekeeper Elsie Hughes on the show - couldn't believe it when the Hollywood hunk recognised her when she went to visit her husband Kevin McNally on the set of the latest 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie.

She said: "My husband was recently filming the fifth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' film with Johnny Depp and he said, 'What was it I saw you in once... Oh you were in 'Downton Abbey', I love that show.'

"His favourite characters were Mr. Carson and Daisy!"

Kevin had a cameo role in 'Downton' in 2011 and Phyllis - who has a 19-year-old son, David, with her spouse - was stunned when she learned of his casting.

She said: "I couldn't believe it when Kevin phoned me up and said he was doing 'Downton' too. None of the producers or directors had said anything.

"It was like being your husband to work day, with me saying, 'Here's what I do darling, join in if you like.' "

Phyllis is delighted her on-screen alter ego has found love with butler Carson - who is played by Jim Carter - especially as their romance has been such a hit with fans.

She told Woman magazine: "We knew Mrs. Hughes and Carson were headed for romance for a little while, but it was nice to hear that fans were cheering and crying when he proposed.

"Jim and I have had a lot of people coming up to us and asking when they're going to get together, so now it's finally come about they'll be very happy."
