The former 'EastEnders' star - who is currently performing at Proud Cabaret in London - has told how he came close to being left "unable to speak", but fortunately doctors were able to remove the growth.

He is quoted by The Sun newspaper's Bizarre TV column as saying: "I woke up one day and I couldn’t speak.

"It was in the middle of COVID so it took a while for them to find out what was wrong as no one wanted to look in someone’s mouth at that point.

"They found a cyst and removed it but I could have been left unable to speak, let alone sing, for the rest of my life."

In April 2020, the 50-year-old star - who is best known for playing Christian Clarke in the BBC One soap - admitted appearing on 'Celebrity MasterChef' saved him from cocaine addiction.

The star saw off competition from reality star Spencer Matthews and former rugby player Martin Bayfield to find victory in the 2018 final, and he credits the show and cooking with saving his life.

He said: "Just preparing a meal is an act of self care and that was lacking in my life. I lost Mum in April 2017 and I was already down the wrong path.

"But in the six months that followed, I knew I needed to change. I just didn't know how to do it and, more ¬importantly, I didn't think that I could.

"I wasn't a big drinker, I was a big snorter, yeah, that was my thing. The booze was really secondary, the coke was the thing that was my go to."
