John Bishop is making a return to the BBC in a new three-part show documenting his travels to Australia.

John Bishop's Australia (working title) will see one of Britain's biggest comedy stars in his international travelogue debut, retracing the route of a gigantic bike journey he made back in 1992 as a 25-year-old.

Exploring the country of Australia and John's adventures down under, his original diary from the 1992 experience will be used as John cycles routes from Sydney up the East Coast of Australia and towards far Northern Queensland.

A range of eccentric characters will be met along the way, all with fascinating stories, and he'll come face-to-face with some true natural wonders.

The comedian said about his return to Australia: “Retracing the steps of a journey which holds such amazing memories has been an incredible experience and a real privilege. I met some amazing people the first time round and I’m delighted to say I did it again, it’s the people and their stories that make Australia great. The scenery isn’t bad either.”

The series will be spread over three one hour episodes, examining just how the country has changed in the 22 years since John's first trip and learning what it is to be an Australian citizen in the present day.

BBC One Controller Charlotte Moore said: “It’s great to have John Bishop, one of the country’s best loved comedians, presenting a wonderfully colourful travelogue on BBC One. Riding off the beaten track, viewers will get to see another side of both him and Australia.”

John Bishop's Australia comes to the BBC this summer.
