Joey Essex’s emotions over his mum’s suicide 22 years ago are still “very painful” and “raw”.
The ‘TOWIE’ star, 32, was 10 years old when his mother Tina took her life in 2001, but he says he doesn’t think he will ever get over the agony caused by her death, and added performing a routine in her memory on last week’s ‘Dancing on Ice’ semi-final brought agonising feelings to the surface.
He told the Metro newspaper: “It was extremely difficult to do that, to be honest, because I had this flooding of emotions beforehand.
“When I got asked to do a personal skate, the first person that come to my mind was my mum. But it still is very painful, very raw.
“I don’t think I’ll fully ever properly get over that situation.”
Joey also revealed he had no idea his nan, who was in the audience while he performed on the ITV1 show alongside his pro partner and rumoured girlfriend Vanessa Bauer, 26, was clutching a piece of his mum’s clothing.
He said: “My mum passed me a silk scarf when I was young. I told my nan about it.
“She brought the scarf, had it in her pocket.”
Joey – who has previously said one of his flats was haunted by the ghost of a small boy – also said about feeling his mum’s spirit watching over him: “I do have them, sort of, ‘feels’ sometimes.
“I’m not really superstitious but I do believe my mum is looking over me. I feel she’d be proud. She would have loved to have been there.”
