The forthcoming eight-part drama, which has also announced the casting of Rufus Sewell this week, will follow the early life of Queen Victoria, looking at her ascension to the throne at the age of 18 through to her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert.

Ruling for a historic 63 years, she became Britain's longest-serving monarch until she was overtaken earlier this year on September 9 by Queen Elizabeth II.

Sewell will play Lord Melbourne, Victoria's first prime minister and a man whom the Queen immediately connected with. Their intimate friendship became a common source of gossip which threatened to destabilise the Government.

Further cast comes in the shape of Paul Rhys as Sir John Conroy, Peter Firth as the Queen's conniving uncle, the Duke of Cumberland, and Catherine Flemming as Queen Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent.

Eve Myles is also on board as Mrs Jenkins, the Queen's senior dresser, whilst Adrian Schiller plays Household Steward Penge. Nichola McAuliffe steps into the role of the ruthless Duchess of Cumberland, with Daniela Holtz playing Victoria's governess and confidante Baroness Lehzen.

Nell Hudson, Tommy-Lawrence Knight and Nigel Lindsay are also in the show as new household member Miss Skerrett, hall boy Brodie and Sir Robert Peel, the Tory party's leader, respectively.

Alice Orr-Ewing rounds out the cast as Lady Flora Hastings, lady-in-waiting to Victoria's mother, the Duchess of Kent.

Further casting is underway ahead of filming in the North of England this month.
