Jay Blades has been getting "a lot of grief" over touching King Charles.
The 52-year-old TV star welcomed the now-monarch onto 'The Repair Shop' prior to the death of Queen Elizabeth when he was known as Prince Charles and was seen breaking royal protocol by touching the royal but thinks the move brought "him out of himself."
He said: "Tell you what, the King would be fine because he’s got a good heart. That’s all you need in the community where I grew up. A good heart and a willingness to make a positive change.
"I think I did bring him out of himself. There was a moment when I thought he was just going to grab his clock back and I was like, ‘Nah, mate, hold on. These guys [the repair staff] have done a bit of work ’ere and you have to hear about it. There’s a procedure!’ As for the touching – I’ve been getting a lot of grief about that. ‘Jay, you broke protocol, mate!’"
Jay went on to add that there was "plenty" of security on the set of the BBC One restoration show and joked they didn't tell him to "not touch the geezer" before remarking that the King is "only a human" and called for critics to be quiet.
He told The Times: "Well, there was plenty of royal security there to say don’t touch the geezer, but they didn’t. He’s only a human and he touched me too. So I think everyone should pipe down. There’s too many people out there who think they’re the Tripadvisor owl. They want to judge everything. Well, I don’t need you, owl."
