Jamie Dornan has defended The Fall's second series, stating that the BBC Two crime drama "had to expand" if it were to succeed, despite being met with some criticism during its second run for expanding its format beyond the search for serial killer Paul Spector (Dornan).

Dornan's insisted that the show needed a dramatic reinvention for it to continue beyond a single series in a chat with The Guardian, saying: "The thing is, the show had to develop and expand. You can't just regurgitate what you did in the first series.

"Some people's argument is that you should stop after the first series."

Confirmed to return for the third series of The Fall alongside co-star Gillian Anderson, he hinted it may not be the end of the show as previously reported.

"I would happily play Paul forever and one thing I'm learning is: 'Ah, f**k it, you can't please everyone'."

The Fall will return for a third series next year and Dornan's commitment to the show will not interfere with his return for the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel.
