James Whale nears end of terminal cancer treatment

The 71-year-old broadcaster - who is living with stage four kidney cancer - has come off all the steroids he was on, but he "feels better" for that because they made him look like a "balloon".

He told the Daily Mirror newspaper: "I’m kind of at the end, the end of my treatment."

But he joked: "When I lose a lot more weight when I get really ill, I’ll look fantastic.

"I’ve just come off all the steroids I was on, which made me look like a bloody balloon. I’m feeling better from that."

But James insisted it is "more difficult" for his wife Nadine Lamont-Brown to watch him battling terminal cancer.

He said: "The cancer gets into your head and sometimes you can’t stand noise.

"At the moment, I have got cancer fatigue, which makes you very tired.

"Some days I might feel sorry for myself. I feel sorry for my wife really. It’s more difficult for her."

Nadine added: "He’s had all the possible treatments, he’s on a clinical trial but we’re probably going to be winding up on that quite soon. It’s stopped working."

James and Nadine attended the Television and Radio Industries Club [TRIC] Awards this week, where he received the first ever TRIC Recognition Award, to honour his outstanding work and dedication devoted to the TV, radio and online industry over the years.

TRIC Chair Daniel Todaro said: "James Whale is an innovator within broadcast media as a pioneer of the talk radio and laterally the talk TV genre in the UK.

"So many have carved out a career in the talk genre but James remains the king of the UK talk show.

"TRIC is not only honoured bur delighted to recognise an individual whose career has spanned many generations."
