The 40-year-old dancing pro was announced for the series last month but despite the skills the star picked up on 'Strictly Come Dancing' he has disputed claims that he's at an advantage because he's a dancer.

Speaking to Digital Spy, he said: "I'll be perfectly honest; at the beginning, I was petrified of it. I had all the hockey pads on and everything. I didn't really enjoy it at the beginning."

"I came home to [wife] Ola after training for the first couple of weeks, I was saying, 'I'm really not enjoying it, it's so difficult and I'm scared of falling'. I think that's an age thing, as you get older you become more fearful of things."

Although James struggled at the start of his training, he confessed that after he met his professional partner and spent more time "on the ice" he started to feel more confident about the competition.

He explained: "But the more time I spent on the ice, I started to be able to... I can go backwards now, do a few little turns and things like that.

"I met my partner, and since I've met my partner, it's all become a little bit easier. I've put in a lot of hours.

"I'm one of these people who if I can't do something straight away it really frustrates me. It has been really, really difficult.

"I'd actually say it's the hardest thing I've ever had to learn. It's so hard. It's like having a couple of knives under your feet."
