James Buckley avoids using public toilets because he always gets approached by 'Inbetweeners' fans.
The 35-year-old actor is famous for playing foul-mouthed teenager Jay Cartwright in the popular sitcom, and although he is always happy to meet fans he doesn't appreciate it when he is stopped mid-flow at the urinal by people who want to talk to him about the programme.
Speaking on the Headstrong podcast, he said: “I don’t feel comfortable enough to use a urinal anymore. I haven’t used one for years, I’ve always got to go to a cubicle because it has happened, I’m there with it out and people are trying to talk to me about 'The Inbetweeners'. I’m like, ‘Do you want to give me 30 seconds…’”
Although it can be tricky for him to use public toilets, James says that nearly all 'Inbetweeners' fans are lovely and only want to talk to him so they can share their love of the programme.
However, James - who is is one of the top earning celebrities on video messaging service Cameo thanks to his Jay insults - doesn't think he'll ever get used to being recognised in public.
He shared: “I never considered being famous or anything like that. I’ve got a very low level of fame, but it’s still unusual, it doesn’t feel very natural, it feels very odd. I just wanted to be an actor, more specifically I just wanted to make people laugh on television. I didn’t really consider that there might be a chance that people would recognise me if I walked down the street. It’s not something that I really thought too much about at the time. It is a bit odd. I don’t want people to have a preconception of me. People are usually just very disappointed when they meet me.
“Usually people are alright. I think I’ve been very lucky as people seem to quite like Jay from The Inbetweeners. Everyone is usually very nice to me, which is a lovely way to love your life. I think it might be different if I was like a soap villain. Those people get attacked in the street, ‘You killed Tiffany!’”
