ITV have defended their decision over James Arthur's upcoming X Factor performance.
The 'You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You' singer is due to perform his next single on the talent show on Saturday night, but viewers have called for him to be axed following criticisms bought against the star for using a homophobic slur in a rap song he wrote during a feud with British MC Micky Worthless.
An official statement released by ITV read: "Both ITV and the producers of The X Factor would like to make it clear that in no way do we support, condone or share any form of homophobia or discrimination,
"Following his comments James has since apologised last week, making it clear that he did not mean to cause any offence and explaining the context behind his remarks."
Over 6,000 fans have joined an online petition challenging producers to drop the 25-year-old star from the line-up in a Facebook campaign called 'Drop Homophobe James Arthur From X Factor'.
Viewers also took to Twitter to express their fury with some arguing the reigning 'X Factor' winner should suffer the same punishment as Chris Fountain - who was dropped by ITV from his role as Tommy Duckworth on 'Coronation Street' after he used rape lyrics in a rap online.
Twitter user Warren Jenkins tweeted: "Corrie used Chris Fountain as an example. Time to do the same and #dropjamesarthur. (sic)"
While another user, Feral26 posted: "Corrie sack Chris Fountain, rightly, over rape rap. #XFactor stand up and show your backbone! (sic)"
James' insult also caused a spat with fellow 'X Factor' alumni Lucy Spraggan, who also condemned his actions via the social-networking site earlier this month.
